MUSEO ALAMEDA STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
The Museo Alameda in association with the Institution Smithsonian is offering professional 12-week internships to university students interested in obtaining quality, real world experience in Business and Arts Management.
Business Majors can obtain experience in Marketing, Human Resources, and General Business Operations.
Humanities & Arts Majors can obtain experience in Museum Programming, Exhibition Planning &
Development, and Research


What is an Intership?
The Museo Alameda, in affiliation with the Smithsonian Institution, offers formal internships to qualified applicants. An Alameda internship is a prearranged, structured learning experience that takes place within a specific time period, usually three or more months. The experience should be relevant both to the intern’s academic and professional goals and to the professional disciplines represented at the Museo Alameda.

Qualification Requirements
The Internship Program is designed for full-time college students or candidates seeking a career in arts and/or business management with little or no experience. Candidates should

  • Be in the process of completing or have completed an undergraduate education
  • Demonstrate a serious interest in pursuing a career in the Arts,
    Museums, Non-Profit Operations and/or Education
  • Submit official university transcripts
  • Complete internship essays
  • Complete an interview

Schedule
The Museo Alameda is flexible with student college schedules and asks for a commitment of at least 25-40 hours per week for at least 12 weeks depending on the type of internship. Internships are available for Fall, Spring, and/or Summer sessions

Types of Internships

1. Post-Graduate Intern – (35 Hrs.) 1. In-School Intern – (25 Hrs.) 1. Semester Long Term – (40 Hrs.)
Recent graduates who have completed an undergraduate degree or who are enrolled in a graduate degree program Full time undergraduate students who are attending college during the internship Undergraduate or graduate students who will not be taking classes during a semester in order to qualify for semester internship college credits

Internship Completion
Upon successful completion of the program, the intern

  • Will receive an exit interview
  • Will receive a certificate of completion
  • Will receive a copy of their performance evaluation
  • Be invited to the Internship Thank You Luncheon
  • Qualify for a continued paid part-time assistantship
  • Qualify for internships in other departments if desired

Other Requirements and Restrictions:

  • Dress Business Casual
  • No guarantee of permanent, full-time employment upon internship completion
  • Knowledge of the internet and of Windows-based word processing and database programs is essential.

Intern Positions
The Office of Administration oversees the Museo’s financial and administrative activities. It establishes policies concerning the operating budget and materials procurement and maintains managerial control over Museo operations. The department performs a variety of tasks within one or more administrative functions (e.g., accounting, payroll, human resources, purchasing, security). The administration staff composes reports and correspondence; maintains record keeping and database systems and provides routine projections (e.g., budget, staffing, equipment). This internship is ideal for those looking to gain exposure in business management and operations.

The Office of Development is responsible for finding private funds to support education programs, exhibitions, publications, research, and special events. The office works locally and nationally with individuals, foundations, corporations, and government sources to accomplish its mission. An intern would have the opportunity to carry out research, develop strategies, and write proposals for various projects. Intern should be detail-oriented, have an interest in research, and possess strong writing and critical thinking skills.

The Department of Education is charged with telling the story of the Latino experience in America through art, history and culture. Museo education programs provide inclusive access for all audience groups—including early childhood, youth, teen, young adult, adult, family, and elder visitors. Critical audience planning considerations include socio-economic level, age-appropriateness, bilingual language (Spanish and English), and special needs requirements for those with physical and learning disabilities and hearing and sight impairments. Information is disseminated through gallery tours, public programs, and a variety of community outreach programs. An intern needs to have general knowledge of history and art with proficiency in library research, interpersonal and writing skills are essential.

Exhibitions and Registrar
Each office has individual responsibilities, but they work closely together. Individual department or cross-departmental internships are possible for these two offices.

Office of the Registrar
The Office of the Registrar is responsible for the safekeeping of the objects on loan to the Museo Alameda and objects in the permanent collection, as well as setting the exhibitions schedule, establishing contracts with external organizers, negotiating loans, obtaining photographs and reproduction rights for exhibition objects and serves as liaison with other Museo offices on exhibition related matters. The office creates and maintains the official records for all incoming and original exhibitions on view in the museum. An intern should have basic knowledge of museum collections management practices, including collections care, and object handling.

Office of Exhibitions
The Office of Exhibitions is responsible for designing, building and installing the exhibitions in the Museo as well as overseeing contract personnel to this end. The office is also responsible for all exhibition graphics and the creation of object labels and museum signage. An intern should have basic carpentry skills, basic knowledge of museum installation practices, object handling, and be able to lift at least 40 pounds.

Graphic Design
Graphic design interns should have basic knowledge of graphics software and terminology.
The Office of Public Affairs is responsible for all public relations for the Museo, including general contact with the news media and specialized contacts relating to exhibition openings and special events. An intern must possess the ability to research, organize, and synthesize information and put it into clear,
concise written form, as well as to work well with journalists and the general public.

The Marketing and Special Events Department is responsible for all the marketing initiatives undertaken by The Alameda National Center for Latino Arts & Culture, as well as coordinating all events on campus premises. During the internship the intern will work closely with and report to the Marketing and Special Events Manager and subsequently to the Director of Administration. An intern must be able to multitask and change pace and direction while staying focused ultimately delivering superior attention to detail ensuring client satisfaction. In addition to the above characteristics an intern must be able to organize, research, and synthesize information and put into clear concise written form. He/She must have adequate knowledge with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe programs including Word, Excel, Publisher, Photoshop etc. Also, the intern must have a positive attitude, high energy and flexibility with potential weekend meetings and events.
The Intern to the Museum Director works directly with the Museo Alameda Director and will assist with multiple projects with which the director is immediately involved. The student may assist with initiatives in both the administrative and programming sectors of the museum, as well as in other areas requiring assistance. Interns may be needed to aid in research related to exhibitions or to provide assistance with Museo generated publications and mailings. The intern may also engage in clerical or organizational duties as required by the Director and may also have the opportunity to attend meetings or engagements as relevant to the organization’s needs. The student selected for the internship must demonstrate flexibility, strong organizational skills, the ability to edit and/or write simple correspondence, and exhibit a professional demeanor.

The Intern to Director of Administration works directly with the Museo Alameda Director. The intern will assist with multiple projects with which the director is immediately involved. The intern may assist with initiatives in the Administrative sectors of the museum as well as in other area requiring assistance. The intern may also engage in organizational duties as required by the Director and may also have the opportunity to attend meetings or engagements as relevant to the organization’s needs. The student selected for the internship must demonstrate flexibility, strong organizational skills, the ability to edit and/or write simple correspondence, and exhibit a professional demeanor
